General Aims

The ICT policy will allow all pupils at Sacred Heart of Mary Girls’ School to:

  • become competent and effective users of  a range of ICT tools and materials;

  • become largely autonomous users of ICT;

  • be aware of the ways in which ICT tools can help them in their work;

  • understand the limitations of ICT tools and the results they produce;

  • reflect critically on their own and others use of ICT.

This is to be achieved at KS3 by means of specific ICT time tabled courses together with input from Mathematics, CDT and Science.  In Year 7, Year 8 and the early part of Year 9, pupils are encouraged to gain skills through relatively short, teacher directed topics.  In the latter part of Year 9, students encounter longer topics allowing them to use their own strategies to solve problems and to have an increasing autonomy over their learning.

The KS3 ICT National Curriculum is delivered through discrete ICT double lessons (100 minutes) which is every fortnight.

At KS4 pupils can choose Information & Communication Technology in their options.  This course enables the students to further develop their ICT skills taught at KS3.

It is worth noting that Teachers within the department should know and understand:

  • That there is a specialist terminology for ICT;

  • That electronic content can comprise text, graphics, audio, video and can be saved in specific formats for different purposes;

  • That content has to be stored somewhere, and it takes up storage space on the network or hard disk;

  • That ICT systems can represent static or dynamic content.

  • That content can be transferred between applications.

Teaching and learning aspects include:

  • That classroom ICT resources should be organised effectively to meet the learning objectives;

  • That key questions should be asked to stimulate and direct pupils learning;

  • That the teacher should provide a model of good practice in ICT for the pupils;

  • That the teacher should assist the pupils in evaluating the contribution of ICT to their learning.
